South East Central Railway has played a vital role in enhancing India’s economic prosperity by facilitating the movement of key resources such as coal, power, cement and steel across the country. Since its inception in 2003, when the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee inaugurated the region at Bilaspur, South East Central Railway has emerged as a significant force in improving the movement of both freight and passenger. Headquartered in Bilaspur, South East Central Railway operates in mineral-rich states such as Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Odisha. This centrally located region is crucial for the transportation of coal, which supports thermal power plants and industries beyond its immediate geographical area. This railway has contributed significantly to industrial development and employment generation by ensuring a steady flow of essential resources.
In recent years, India’s rapid infrastructure development and expansion of power, cement, coal and steel sectors have increased the demand for transportation of raw materials. South East Central Railway has effectively met this demand by successfully managing the movement of coal and other minerals. This has been instrumental in sustaining the country’s economic growth. Despite this achievement, South East Central Railway continues to explore new avenues to expand its infrastructure and improve mineral transportation capacity, especially coal. Despite the challenge of managing a steady 5% growth in passenger traffic along with heavy freight traffic, passenger services also remain a priority for South East Central Railway. Special trains are run during the festive season and additional coaches are frequently added to existing trains to accommodate the increasing number of passengers. Efforts are also being made to improve punctuality to ensure a seamless travel experience.
To modernise its infrastructure, South East Central Railway is actively implementing the Amrut Bharat Station Yojana, which aims to redevelop major stations to enhance passenger amenities and operational efficiency. Under this initiative, major stations like Bilaspur, Raipur and Durg are being extensively redeveloped. The transformation of Bilaspur station is estimated to cost Rs 392 crore, which includes improved entry points, heritage-inspired architecture integrating local art, and sustainable features such as solar panels and rainwater harvesting. The station will have 26 lifts and 26 escalators, significantly improving accessibility.
The redevelopment of Raipur station, with a budget of ₹463 crore, integrates provisions for future metro connectivity and improved bus station accessibility. Expanded parking facilities and Divyaang-friendly facilities are the main features of the renovated station.
Durg station, to be upgraded at a cost of ₹441 crore, will feature heritage-themed design, modern amenities and green building certification. Its expanded layout will ensure greater convenience for passengers.
Apart from these major hubs, South East Central Railway is modernising 46 additional stations with a budget of ₹567 crore. Major stations like Raigarh, Korba, Ambikapur, Bhilai Nagar, Rajnandgaon, Gondia and Chhindwara are part of this initiative. The Amrut Bharat Station Yojana promises to transform the passenger experience, with modern waiting areas, enhanced security with CCTV coverage and improved sanitation facilities. By adopting sustainable practices and boosting local economies, the scheme is set to redefine the role of Indian Railways as a symbol of progress and efficiency.
