Indore(Team Newsbuddy) : With the onset of Ganeshotsav, thousands of devotees are thronging the historic Bada Ganpati Temple, home to Asia’s largest Ganesha idol, standing 25 feet tall and 14 feet wide. This 119-year-old marvel, built in 1901, continues to be the spiritual heartbeat of Indore.
The decoration of the colossal idol is a grand ritual that takes around 15 days of meticulous preparation. Every year, the deity is adorned with 14 kilograms of pure ghee and 25 kilograms of sindoor, along with a special robe (chola) offered by 11 Brahmin priests. This sacred tradition is observed four times annually—on Bhadrapada Sudi Chaturthi, Kartik Badi Chaturthi, Magh Badi Chaturthi, and Vaishakh Sudi Chaturthi.
The origin of this majestic idol traces back to Pandit Narayan Dadhich, a devout follower of Lord Ganesha, who dreamt of the deity in this divine form. Inspired by his vision, the idol was crafted over nearly three years, using a rare blend of materials:
Ears, hands, and trunk: Copper
Legs: Reinforced with iron rods
Face: Crafted with gold and silver
Sacred soil & water: Brought from holy sites like Kashi, Ujjain, Ayodhya, and Mathura, as well as cowsheds, elephant and horse stables
Precious stones: Diamond, emerald, topaz, pearl, and ruby, combined with lime, sand, bricks, and even fenugreek seeds
Resting on a 4-foot-high platform, the idol exudes unmatched grandeur, making it a landmark not just for Indore, but for all of India.
Today, the temple continues to be maintained by the third generation of the Dadhich family. Under the guidance of Pandit Dhaneshwar Dadhich, priests Pandit Pramod, Rakesh, and Rajesh Dadhich carry forward the age-old rituals with devotion and precision.
As Ganeshotsav begins, the Bada Ganpati of Indore stands as a beacon of faith, tradition, and divine magnificence, drawing devotees from far and wide to seek blessings from Asia’s tallest Ganesha.
