2 min readIndore(Team Newsbuddy): A Year-old first-year B.Tech student at IIT Indore, Madhya Pradesh, was found dead in his hostel room on Friday night in an apparent case of suicide. The deceased, identified as Rohit, was a native of Nalgonda, Telangana, who had recently moved to Indore to pursue his studies.
According to reports, Rohit’s friends had gone to the dining hall for dinner and returned to find him hanging in his room at the Vikram Sarabhai Hostel. The hostel warden and Simrol police were immediately informed. The body has been sent to the district hospital for postmortem, and investigations are underway.
Preliminary police inquiries suggest that Rohit was under severe mental stress due to financial losses incurred through online betting. He frequently played mobile games and reportedly got drawn into betting, eventually losing lakhs of rupees, which left him deeply distressed.
While no suicide note was found, Rohit left a WhatsApp status describing online betting games as dangerous as drug addiction. The police are now investigating his financial transactions and the mobile apps he used. Rural ASP Rupesh Dwivedi confirmed that Rohit was a bright student who lived alone in his room and had been spending a significant amount of time on his phone.
The investigation is also exploring whether Rohit was under pressure of debt or faced threats from anyone. However, Rohit’s elder brother has dismissed the possibility of suicide and alleged foul play, calling for a thorough and impartial investigation into the incident.
This tragic incident sheds light on the growing menace of online betting and its devastating consequences on young lives. Authorities are urging parents, educators, and peers to monitor behavioral changes in students and raise awareness about the risks associated with such activities.
