Fear water-logging in monsoon
Indore(Team Newsbuddy): Residents of Ward No. 37 are raising serious concerns over the reduction in the width of the open drain passing through Radhika Palace, urging the Indore Development Authority (IDA) to take corrective measures. They fear that narrowing the drain from its original 10-15 feet to a mere 4-5 feet could lead to excessive water flow and severe waterlogging in the locality during the upcoming rainy season.
The IDA is constructing a new road under the master plan from Tulsi Nagar to Advance Academy in Ward No. 37. As part of this project, the open drain at Radhika Palace has been converted into a narrow pipeline. The drain, which originates from Scheme No. 134, now has a retaining wall built in its middle, with parts filled in to facilitate road construction. Residents allege that the drain was shifted to one side to protect shops on the opposite side of the road, a move they claim violates the National Green Tribunal (NGT) guidelines, which prohibit closing or altering the width and depth of open drains.
The retaining wall extends up to the culvert built by the municipal corporation at Radhika Palace, raising concerns that it will obstruct water flow during the monsoon, exacerbating the risk of flooding. Residents argue that this construction not only flouts environmental regulations but also endangers their daily lives.
K.K. Jha, convener, and Rajesh Tomar, president of the Residents’ Association of Wards 36 and 37, have demanded immediate action from the IDA. They have called for the restoration of the drain’s original width and an increase in the width of the road from the Tulsi Nagar culvert to the BCM Paradise intersection, in line with the master plan, to address the growing traffic pressure in the area.
Residents have warned that without prompt intervention, the monsoon could bring significant challenges to the locality. They are looking to the IDA and the municipal corporation for swift and effective measures to resolve the issue.
