It all started with a conversation among three friends, and those random words spoken round the table, turned into an idea that became an instant hit! LIT Chowk– India’s first socio-cultural festival is now a mood, a vibe. Bringing art, literature, and culture together at one platform, LIT Chowk hosts impactful and meaningful
sessions, cultural performances, exhibitions, and more, which educate, entertain, connect, and nurture audiences with intellect and values. It is 2025, and the “Chowk is LIT” for a fifth season from December 19th to 21st at the Gandhi Hall in Indore, after four successful stints.

In conversation with the founders, Nikhil Dave and LIT Chowk CEO Dhara Pandey,
trying to dig in their minds and finding an answer to “What makes LIT Chowk a hit, and how do they pull it off every time?”

Why Indore?
Indore wears many feathers to its cap, being the Education hub of Central India, Economic Capital of Madhya Pradesh, the cleanest city of India, and now a major investment center. Despite all of this inevitable, ever since the reign of the Holkars, Indore has never had an “intellectual property” of its own. This served to be the primary reason behind the origin of LIT Chowk. Moreover, the sense of belonging, along with the city’s efficacy (taser in Urdu) is what has led to the origin of Indore’s LIT Chowk.

Why is this “Chowk” different?
What intrigues one is the “uniqueness” of LIT Chowk. The three-day annual event
just manages to keep everyone hooked, season after season. But what is it that
makes it different, really? The makers have your answers:

  • Socio-cultural, not “literature”: The name “LIT” is often misapprehended
with literature. But LIT Chowk differs from the mundane literature festivals.
Here, Dhara Pandey clarifies that the event does not entirely revolve around literature, but includes art, music, poetry, and every other domain which the crowd associates with.
  • Celebrates the Indian Spirit: The event is presented very much like a “Chowk”. Chowk is an open market area (bazaar) or the main street in a village, town or city. It has been an age-old tradition in India to hold all discussions, meetings, celebrations, and almost every other event of the place. With LIT Chowk, the makers have tried their part to keep up with the Indianness, holding all the sessions and other performances at the
Chowk…open, visible and impactful at the same time.
  • Values and intellect: The makers strictly swear to keep the event meaningful and worth the impact, adhering to values and intellect. Dhara Pandey emphasises on drawing a line here, stating that LIT Chowk is not entertainment that people often seek from every other event they attend. Their sole aim is to impart something that ensures connectivity to the roots, culture and heritage.
  • The connect with every generation: With personalities from all walks of life,
including politics, music, history, culture, philanthropy, sports, cinema, and other domains lighting up the stage, its likely that every generation connects at LIT Chowk, ensuring there’s something for everyone. It’s the relatability that ultimately results in connectivity.
  • A festival to be enjoyed: The three-day annual event is more of a festival that needs to be cherished and enjoyed, as they rightly call it. A socio-cultural festival that celebrates creativity, passion, and all forms of art.
  • A platform: LIT Chowk serves as a dedicated platform for passionate individuals who want to come forward and showcase their talents.

With initiatives such as the Performance Chowk, LIT Thiya, LIT Women’s Chowk, and the Indore Discourse, the foundation provides a unique opportunity to celebrate vocal art, women’s voices and talents, discussions, ideas, and actions to build Indore’s future, and lastly, the cultural performances which draw participations from all over India, including the remote parts of the country.

Moreover, with the Mrityunjay Bharat initiative, the makers have been tirelessly working to provide food, education, and accommodation in Indore to young girls who lack the bare necessities in the NorthEast. Over a 13-year journey, so many girls took flight to a secure future.

The one core strength!
It’s not the reach, the promotions, or any endorsement that makes LIT Chowk a happening event. The founders give due credit to the “volunteers” whose toil,
determination, and pure intent serves the purpose.

Nikhil Dave affirms, “Every year, we have atleast 1500-1600 volunteers who want to be a part of the team. Unfortunately, we can only allow about 300 of them.
You see, they work all day long, tirelessly, giving their all. And that’s how we are able to ace it always; the intent of our volunteers is visible out there.”

Dhara Pandey adds, “We reveal dates of LIT Chowk on Ganesh Chaturthi every year.
There are no promos, press release or any other advertisement. The
vounteers come along themselves, give three months to this incredible project working round the clock, and making it a success.”

What to expect this season?
With the makers prepping up for the upcoming season, it’s the viewers rising excitement and expectations that’s adding to the hype. Dhara Pandey stresses, “There is no change in the format or the concept. The fifth season will be the same, only new personalities taking the center stage.”

Nikhil Dave concludes, “A performance chowk, impactful sessions everyday, with utmost joy, laughter and celebration in three days is promised. The word of mouth and social media are already doing their job. As of guests, let’s keep it under wraps as of now to keep ‘em all hooked (chuckles).”
