Awareness seminar, quiz competition on Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita held at NIT Raipur

Raipur (Team Newsbuddy): National Institute of Technology (NIT) Raipur organised an awareness seminar and Quiz Competition on Three Criminal Laws (BNS 2023) on 1st July, 2024. The event was graced by Dr. R.K. Tripathi, Director(I/C), NIT Raipur. In this event Dr. Sameer Bajpai, Head (CDC), NIT Raipur, Dr. Shrish Verma, Dean (Academics), NIT Raipur and Dr. Nitin Jain, Dean (SW), NIT Raipur were present. This event is coordinated by Dr. Y. Vijaya Babu, Asst. Professor, HSS Department and Nodal Officer, BNS NIT Raipur. Dr. Parvesh Kumar Rajput, Asst. Professor of Law, HNLU Raipur served as the Chief Speaker. The program was attended by Faculty Members, Staff members, PhD scholars, and students.

The Seminar was organised to spread awareness of the 3 new criminal laws, The Bhartiya Nyaya Sahita (BNS-2023), Bhartiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS-2023) and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam(BSA-2023), which would be enacted from 1st of July, 2024.

Dr. R.K. Tripathi emphasised the need to update British-era laws and ensure that criminals are punished appropriately under the new legal framework. Chief Speaker Dr. Parvesh Kumar Rajput highlighted the significance of laws in shaping society. He traced the historical formation of the first Law Commission in India and the development of key legislations such as the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC). Dr.Rajput detailed the replacement of the IPC with the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023, explaining new methods for registering FIRs and NCRs, including the introduction of eFIRs. He emphasized the enhanced rights and protections for witnesses and women under BNS 2023 and discussed the BNSS (Protection to Citizen Act) and BSS (Evidence Act) as well. The session was lauded as an informative exploration of the new Indian laws.

A quiz competition on the new BNS laws was also held, featuring questions such as “What is Zero FIR?” and “What is a bailable offence?” Following the competition, certificates were awarded to all participants. Dr. Babu addressed the participants, emphasizing the importance of being aware of the new laws and highlighting their benefits for both individuals and society.
