US Congress announces investigation into Trump rally shooting, summons Secret Service
2 min readNew York (Team Newsbuddy): Today, President Donald Trump survived an assassination attempt when a gunman fired a weapon at him at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. At least one bystander is dead. The tremendous bravery of the individual United States Secret Service agents who protected President Trump, eliminated the gunman, and possibly averted more loss of life cannot be overstated.
The Committee on Oversight and Accountability has initiated an investigation into today’s assassination attempt on President Trump and requests your voluntary appearance at a full Committee hearing on July 22, 2024″, says the press release from Oversight Committee.
The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the U.S. House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
With global condemnation of the assassination attempt on former President Trump, the Representative Comer (R-KY) announced that he has initiated contact with the Secret Service and formally requested the agency’s director to testify in a hearing regarding the investigation into what authorities are treating as an attempt on the life of the former president.
“I have already reached out to the Secret Service for a briefing and am also calling on Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle to testify before a hearing. The Oversight Committee will be extending a formal invitation shortly,” Comer stated.
Donald Trump, aged 78, was delivering a speech at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, when multiple gunshots rang out shortly after 6 pm ET. The former president, who was observed with blood from his right ear, later claimed, “I felt the bullet tear through my skin” and that he “was shot with a bullet.”
The suspected shooter, as yet unidentified, was “neutralized by Secret Service,” according to the agency. One attendee at the rally has been reported dead and two other spectators sustained serious injuries, according to Secret Service reports.
“My thoughts and prayers are with President Trump and the victims of the incident at today’s rally in Pennsylvania. I express my gratitude to the courageous Secret Service personnel who risked their lives to protect President Trump, and to the patriotic Americans in the audience who aided others who were injured,” Comer continued.
