Indore(Team Newsbuddy): Geeta, a woman with speech and hearing disabilities who drew national attention when she returned to India from Pakistan in 2015, has now sought a government job after clearing the Class 8 exam with first-division marks.
Officials reported on that the 33-year-old scored 411 out of 600 in the Class 8 exam conducted by the Madhya Pradesh State Open School Education Board, earning special merit in social science and Sanskrit. The Anand Service Society, an Indore-based NGO, has been aiding Geeta’s integration into society since her return.
“Geeta is thrilled with her exam results and is optimistic about her future,” said Gyanendra Purohit, the NGO’s secretary and a sign language expert. During a video call, Geeta communicated her desire to continue her studies alongside pursuing a government job.
“The minimum educational qualification for Class IV government jobs is 8th pass. Geeta now meets this criterion and is eligible to apply,” Purohit stated. Geeta, whose real name is Radha, currently resides in Maharashtra’s Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district with her mother, Meena Pandhare.
Coming from a poor family, Geeta aims to achieve financial independence through employment. “She has expressed that she does not wish to marry at this time,” Purohit added.
Geeta’s journey began nearly 23 years ago when she accidentally crossed into Pakistan as a child by boarding the wrong train. Discovered alone on the Samjhauta Express at Lahore railway station, she was taken in by the Edhi Foundation in Karachi. Thanks to the efforts of the late external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj, Geeta returned to India on October 26, 2015, and was initially housed in an NGO’s residential complex in Indore. She has been living in Maharashtra since reuniting with her family in 2021.
