Shivam Verma, the city’s Municipal Commissioner, addressed a high-profile workshop at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), attended by Municipal Commissioners from various urban local bodies (ULBs).
The workshop aimed to showcase Indore’s innovative strategies and motivate other cities to replicate its success in cleanliness and urban development.
In his address, Commissioner Verma revealed the key factors behind Indore’s consistent top ranking as India’s cleanest city. He highlighted the vital contributions of sanitation workers, who have been equipped with enhanced resources and support systems to ensure safe and effective work environments.
He also discussed the city’s groundbreaking initiative of formally integrating ragpickers into its waste management system, creating sustainable livelihood opportunities while of the workshop was Indore’s unique 6-bin waste segregation system, implemented at the household level. This system enables effective waste processing and recycling, setting a benchmark for sustainable waste management nationwide.
Additionally, the Commissioner shed light on Indore’s environmental achievements, such as the establishment of a Bio-CNG plant, advancements in carbon credit trading, and significant improvements in the city’s Air Quality Index (AQI). Key measures, including mechanized street sweeping, the creation of green buffer zones, transitioning industries to cleaner fuels, and promoting electric vehicles, were lauded by the participants.
Commissioner Verma emphasized that Indore’s success is rooted in active citizen participation. He encouraged other Municipal Commissioners to foster community engagement in their cities to drive similar progress in urban management.
The workshop concluded with an interactive session, where participants commended Indore’s innovative practices and expressed keen interest in adopting them in their cities. The event highlighted Indore’s role as a pioneer in urban development, offering actionable insights and a replicable roadmap for transformative governance.
