Indore: India’s cleanest and smartest city, Indore is poised to achieve yet another global milestone by being nominated for the prestigious Wetland City Accreditation under the Ramsar Convention. Known for its exceptional urban management and environmental initiatives, Indore’s nomination shines a spotlight on its commitment to conserving urban wetlands and fostering environmental sustainability.
The Wetland City Accreditation, introduced during the 12th Conference of Parties (COP12) to the Ramsar Convention in 2015, is a global recognition awarded to cities that demonstrate exemplary efforts in protecting wetlands and maintaining a balanced urban ecosystem.
India’s Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change submitted the nomination for Indore, along with Udaipur and Bhopal, in January 2024. The announcement was made by Union Minister Bhupendra Yadav on the X social media platform, highlighting the importance of wetlands in urban planning and their role in enhancing biodiversity.
If accredited, Indore will join an elite group of global cities recognized for their sustainable practices. This achievement will not only elevate Indore’s reputation but also serve as a testament to its visionary approach to urban environmental management.
Indore’s Sirpur Lake, a Ramsar-recognized site, plays a pivotal role in the city’s environmental conservation efforts. Recognized for its waterbird congregation, the lake is being developed as a Bird Sanctuary with active involvement from over 200 dedicated “wetland mitras” (guardians). These volunteers work tirelessly to conserve bird habitats and raise community awareness, particularly in protecting the endangered Sarus Crane.
Indore, which won India’s Smart City Award 2023 for its outstanding sanitation, water management, and urban environment, continues to set benchmarks for ecological and urban excellence. Its potential accreditation under the Ramsar Convention will further underscore its status as a global leader in sustainable urban development.
With the Ramsar authorities currently reviewing the nominations, Indore’s wait for global recognition is filled with optimism, reinforcing its position as a model city for the nation and the world.
