Indore, Udaipur Included in Ramsar Convention’s List of Wetland Cities

Indore(Team Newsbuddy): Madhya Pradesh has achieved another milestone with the Ramsar Convention recognizing Indore as a Wetland City. Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav has hailed this achievement as a matter of pride for the state.

The Ramsar Convention, an international treaty for the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands, has listed 31 cities worldwide as Wetland Cities. Indore and Udaipur are the two cities from India to feature in this list.

The recognition is a testament to Indore’s efforts in conserving its wetlands while promoting urban development. The city has made significant strides in environmental conservation, with initiatives like the restoration of the Sirpur Lake and the development of the Yashwant Sagar Lake as a bird sanctuary.

The Ramsar Convention was signed in 1971 in Ramsar, Iran, with the aim of conserving and sustainably using wetlands. The convention has identified certain sites as Ramsar Sites, which are recognized for their ecological importance.

The list of Wetland Cities includes:

  • Argentina: Trelew
  • Belgium: Mechelen
  • Botswana: Kasane-Kazungula, Shakawe
  • Chile: Valdivia
  • China: Chongming, Dali, Fuzhou, Hangzhou, Jiuzhaigou, Lhasa, Suzhou, Wenzhou, Yuyang

– France: Abbeville, Arles, Hampigny

  • Iran: Babol, Bandar Kiashahr, Gandoman
  • Japan: Nagoya City
  • Morocco: Mehdyia
  • Philippines: Balanga City
  • Poland: Poznan
  • Republic of Korea: Gimhae, Mungyeong
  • Serbia: Novi Sad
  • Switzerland: Geneva
  • Zimbabwe: Victoria Falls

The recognition of Indore as a Wetland City is expected to promote sustainable urban development and environmental conservation in the city.
