Time to work at local level for tobacco eradication: Dr Dilip Acharya
Indore (Team Newsbuddy):Indian Medical Association (IMA) Indore branch organized “IMA Media Workshop on Smoking and Smokeless Tobacco” in Indore. Experts from all over the country and representatives from the field of public health participated in the program.
At the beginning of the program, various doctors of the city shared their work done in tobacco control.
Dr. Dilip Kumar Acharya, the main organizer of the workshop and the National Chairman of the Cancer and Tobacco Control Committee of IMA, who has been active in the work of tobacco prohibition for the last 30 years, explained in detail the harms caused to the body by tobacco and the methods to quit it and told how this evil can be reduced in the society at the local level.
Dr. Jagdish Kaur, Regional Advisor, Tobacco Control, World Health Organization South East Asia Region, who was specially come for this occasion from Delhi, gave information about the strategies and government frameworks required to get rid of tobacco addiction and also discussed this year’s World No Tobacco Day theme. She explained how this problem can be dealt with by cooperation at personal, social and policy levels.
Mukesh Sinha from MPVHA, gave detailed information about the tobacco prohibition laws and public awareness campaigns implemented by the state government. He told how the government is taking concrete steps in this direction and the general public should also participate in it.
Dr. Ravi Mehrotra shared his expertise on the subject of smokeless tobacco and Areca nut through online medium from America and also presented global experiences as examples.
IMA National President Dr. Dilip Bhanushali, who came specially for the workshop from Hyderabad, highlighted the role and commitment of the Indian Medical Association and assured the continuity of such programs in future. He also said that IMA is not against treatment by any pathy but opposes Mixopathy.
Speaking during the inauguration of the program, the President of Press Club of Indore, Shri Arvind Tiwari, announced that in future more programs, in collaboration with doctors in the field will be arranged by press club of Indore for tobacco control.
All the representatives and journalists present in the second session of the program expressed their views on how the society can be freed from social evils like tobacco through collective efforts and it is possible to build a healthy nation.
IMA Indore President Dr. Vallabh Mundhra and Secretary Dr. Sunil Banthia said that on this occasion more than 100 participants participated and made the program successful and emphasized the need to organize such public awareness programs in future as well.
