Vacates government bungalow 265 days after retirement

New Delhi (Team Newsbuddy): Former Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud has vacated the official residence of the head of the Supreme Court in the national capital. Justice Chandrachud, the 50th CJI of India, retired on November 8, 2024. Recently, a controversy arose over his staying longer than the scheduled time at the CJI’s official residence at 5, Krishna Menon Marg, New Delhi.

Justice Chandrachud clarified the situation by saying that the luggage has been packed and he will soon move to a rented government residence with his wife and children. Justice Chandrachud, his wife Kalpana and daughters Priyanka and Mahi were living in the official residence of the CJI at 5 Krishna Menon Marg, New Delhi. Both Priyanka and Mahi are disabled.

Justice Chandrachud, while detailing the reasons for staying longer than the scheduled time in the bungalow, had said, “We have actually packed our things. Our luggage has already been completely packed. Some items have already been sent to the new house and some are kept in the store room here.” He was responding to a letter sent by the Supreme Court administration to the Central Government regarding his alleged overstay in the government bungalow.

The former CJI had expressed grief over the controversy and cited the medical condition of his daughters, who needed a ‘wheelchair’ friendly house. Referring to the incident, Justice Chandrachud had said that after retirement, he had spoken to the then Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna, who had succeeded him, and told him that he had to return to the bungalow at 14, Tughlaq Road, where he lived before becoming the CJI.

Justice Khanna, however, had asked Justice Chandrachud to stay in the CJI’s bungalow itself, as Justice Khanna did not want to live in the official residence. The Supreme Court administration had written a letter to the Center on July 1, saying that Justice Chandrachud had stayed in the CJI bungalow for more than the permitted period and had demanded that the property be vacated.
