‘Cash Scandal’
New Delhi (Team Newsbuddy): The motion of ‘impeachment’ against Justice Yashwant Verma of Allahabad High Court, who came into the limelight due to the ‘cash scandal’ while being a judge in Delhi High Court, has been accepted in the Lok Sabha. Accepting this proposal given by the MPs, Speaker Om Birla said, ‘As per subsection 2 of section 3 of the Judges Inquiry Act 1968, he has constituted a 3-member committee for the purpose of investigating the basis of the request to remove Justice Verma from the post.’ This committee includes Supreme Court Justice Arvind Kumar, Madras High Court Chief Justice Manindra Mohan Srivastava and Karnataka High Court Senior Advocate BV Acharya as a legal expert. This committee will submit the report after the investigation, till then this proposal will remain pending, while the process will continue.
Justice Verma was appointed as a judge in Delhi High Court in October 2021 and he remained in this post till April 2025. This year on 14 March, a fire broke out in his government residence in Delhi. After this fire, a huge amount of burnt currency notes were allegedly recovered. The Supreme Court had formed an in-house committee for investigation, which in its report accused Justice Verma of hiding cash and violating judicial decorum. Justice Verma has been denying it. Amidst the controversies, he was transferred back from Delhi to Allahabad High Court, from where he had come.
