Indore: In a pioneering move for urban sustainability, Indore celebrated “No Car Day” today, sending a strong message nationwide about reducing pollution and promoting eco-friendly transportation. By restricting private vehicle use and encouraging bicycles, e-rickshaws, and public transport, the city took a major step in lowering air pollution and cutting carbon emissions.
Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargav led a cycling rally from Radio Colony to Palasia Chowk, accompanied by Vice-Chancellor Rakesh Singhai, municipal councilor Nandkishore Pahadiya, Abhishek Sharma Bablu, and hundreds of cycling enthusiasts. The rally passed key city landmarks, including Regal Chowk, Maharani Road, Pune Kothari Market, and MG Road, emphasizing the benefits of regular use of sustainable transport for cleaner air and less congested streets.
During the event, private vehicle traffic dropped by 40–50%, resulting in a 15–20% improvement in air quality and saving an estimated 20,000–25,000 liters of fuel. Mayor Bhargav remarked, “No Car Day is more than symbolic. It shows citizens the pressure vehicles put on our roads. With regular use of public transport, bicycles, and e-rickshaws, streets can be less congested, air cleaner, and fuel conserved. Indore is the first city in India to implement this initiative, and while today’s results are modest, the long-term impact will be significant.”
Supporting the initiative, Divisional Commissioner Dr. Sudam Khade traveled to his office on an e-scooter, highlighting the importance of renewable energy and lowering the city’s carbon footprint. “Steps like No Car Day not only make the city greener, they also show that small citizen actions can create big changes,” he said.
Residents actively participated, making noticeable improvements in traffic flow and air quality. Experts say Indore’s No Car Day provides a replicable model for other Indian cities, demonstrating the positive outcomes of collective citizen and administrative efforts.

Key Highlights:
40–50% reduction in private vehicles.
15–20% improvement in air quality.
20,000–25,000 liters of fuel saved in a single day.
Active use of bicycles, e-rickshaws, and public transport by mayor and citizens.

Indore has now positioned itself as a leading green and sustainable city in India, proving that coordinated efforts can achieve measurable reductions in pollution and energy consumption.
