Controversy over the allegation of ‘deactivating Aadhaar card’ in West Bengal?

1 min read

Kolkata. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said in a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi that the Aadhaar cards of people in her state are being “suddenly deactivated”.

Mamta said that most of the people whose Aadhar cards have been deactivated are from SC, ST and OBC communities.

He also said that “deactivating” people’s documents in this way is a gross violation of rules and justice.

In a letter to Prime Minister Modi, Mamata Banerjee said that the Delhi-based Aadhaar office, without doing any ground level investigation and without informing the state government, directly informed the people that Aadhaar cards could be deactivated under Rule 28A of the Aadhaar Regulation 2016.
She wrote to the PM, “I would like to bring to your attention the serious incident of indiscriminate deactivation of Aadhaar cards of people in West Bengal, especially of the Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe and OBC communities.”

“This incident has created chaos and fear among the people, with a large number of people turning to the district administration for redressal of their grievances.”
Earlier, Mamata Banerjee accused the central government of “deactivating” the Aadhaar card in the state before bringing the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
While talking to the media, he had said that “Hopefully the people of Matua and SC-SST community are understanding what is the game plan of BJP. I want to make it clear that I will never allow NRC and detention camps in Bengal.
