Chhattisgarh government hints at changes in urban body elections

Raipur (Team Newsbuddy): Urban body elections are to be held in Chhattisgarh in November-December 2024 after the Lok Sabha elections. Before this, the state government has hinted at major changes in the rules in the next election. Now the public will be able to elect the president of Nagar Panchayat and Municipalities and Mayor in Municipal Corporations. Last time before the elections of urban bodies, the previous Congress’s Bhupesh government had made a big change in the rules of election of Nagar Panchayat, Municipality and Municipal Corporation. In this, the right to elect the chairman and mayor was taken away from the public and given to the elected councilors. Whereas till now the election of the president and mayor in the bodies was done independently and the public has been voting for these top posts. Then the opposition party BJP had strongly opposed this decision. Political analysts had raised questions by saying that such rules would promote electoral malpractices and horse-trading. Even after this, the chairman-mayor were elected in the bodies by the new rule of Bhupesh government.

Now in this matter, the Deputy Chief Minister and Law Minister of the state Arun Sao said in a discussion with the media on Wednesday that he is fully prepared for the urban body elections. This statement of Arun Sao came at a time when the councilor parties of BJP are protesting against the statement of Mayor Ejaz Dhebar regarding the problem of the wards of Raipur. Dhebar had said two days ago that even if PM is made to sit at this place (in the Municipal Corporation), still the problems of the city will not be solved. After this statement, the BJP has started continuously besieging the mayor. Even PM sahab cannot solve the problem in the Municipal Corporation, politics is hot after this statement of Dhebar. Deputy Chief Minister Arun Saw said that the elected mayor of Raipur has done injustice to the public for five years. The statement that has come from him regarding the works of the corporation makes it clear that he has been working with this negativity for four and a half years and that is why the people of the capital have been feeling cheated.
