London: British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has announced that general elections will be held in the country on July 4.

Announcing this, Rishi Sunak said, “The last five years have been the most challenging for the country since the Second World War. In the days to come, I will fight for every vote of yours. We have a clear plan.”

Before the announcement, one after the other, UK cabinet ministers were seen entering the Prime Minister’s Office.

A source in Britain’s ruling Conservative Party has told the BBC that some party MPs are demanding a no-confidence vote against Rishi Sunak.

An MP has described the current atmosphere in the party as a ‘panic’ situation.

General elections in Britain are often held on Thursdays. After all, this practice was followed on 27 October 1931 when the elections were held on Tuesday. 4 July 2024 is also a Thursday.

What is usually the rule?

Parliament is dissolved only after the fifth anniversary of the first meeting of Parliament. This anniversary of the current Parliament was to be on 17 December 2024.

After dissolving the Parliament, 25 working days are given to prepare for the elections.

If the prescribed procedure was followed, the elections in Britain were to be held before 28 January 2025.
