Indore zoo welcomes first African Zebra foal in Madhya Pradesh

1 min read

Indore(Team Newsbuddy): A wave of joy swept through Indore Zoo as a newly-arrived African zebra couple welcomed a foal on Monday. This milestone makes Indore Zoo the first in Madhya Pradesh to house African zebras, which arrived in January, and now the first to house a baby zebra (foal).
Zoo officials revealed that the female zebra was already pregnant upon arrival. MiC member Nandkishore Pahadia noted that the zebras, distinguished by their black-and-white stripes, were brought from Jamnagar, Gujarat, in exchange for white tigers.
Indore Zoo had proposed an animal exchange program to various zoos across the country, offering animals such as tigers, lions, deer, chitals, and jackals, whose populations have increased at the zoo.

Three years ago, a similar plan to bring a zebra from Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Zoo in Mumbai was approved by the Central Zoo Authority but was postponed due to COVID-19.

In another exchange, 245 exotic birds were brought from Jamnagar Zoo in return for five tigers and six lions. The birds included macaws, iguanas, turtles, pocket monkeys, finches, and lories among others. Indore Zoo, spread over 52 acres, now houses over 1,300 wild animals, including nine lions, 11 tigers, and four leopards, with 10 cubs born in the past 11 months. The zoo also boasts a snake house and a birdhouse with over 40 species of birds, drawing numerous visitors.
