Photo journalism is challenging with changing times: Renuka Puri
2 min readIndore (Team Newsbuddy): A photo journalist has no scope to ‘miss’. If you miss a moment, then the news can still be written but the photo cannot be taken. After the advent of mobile, the competition in photography has increased and the photo journalist has to think out of the box and click some special photos.
These things were expressed by renowned photo journalist and photo editor of Indian Express, Renuka Puri, as an expert in the master class organized by State Press Club, MP for photo journalists and journalism students. She said that after photographing nature, advertisement, fashion etc., she did not find peace and coincidentally, once after an assignment of a political event, she chose the path of mainstream photo journalism. When Renuka, who has gained fame for her photographs depicting the condition of women in Tihar Jail, Mary Kom’s daily life as a mother and very different aspects of the lives of politicians, showed some of her clicked pictures on the mega screen, the audience could not stop applauding. She also narrated interesting anecdotes about how she clicked engagement and wedding photographs as a guest at Virendra Sehwag’s wedding when photography was not allowed. She also narrated an incident of misbehavior by Mayawati and gave a message to the journalists to be ready for struggle.
She told the future photo journalists to reach early for coverage and try to get some extra shoots. Choose the subject of your photography according to your interest. Nowadays, digital photography may have given the facility to click unlimited photos, but click after thinking about your frame. There is no need to fear artificial intelligence because we have to give it the command. Still, photos made with AI are now being used in the media.
In the first phase of the master class, State Press Club, MP President Praveen Kumar Khariwal, Rachna Johri, Akhil Hardia, Pushkar Soni, Sanjay Malviya, Bansi Lalwani welcomed Renuka Puri. The program was conducted by State Press Club, MP General Secretary Alok Bajpai. In the end, Women’s Press Club, MP President Sheetal Roy expressed gratitude.
Renuka Puri Master 9 Tips for Future Photography Journalists:
- Be prepared for both good and bad situations. Everything is not always served on a platter.
- Always stay behind the police, not in front. The edge of the police lathi or water cannon does not differentiate a journalist and you are very important to your family.
- Save your money for equipment. Upgrading with time is necessary.
- You have to make a place for yourself with your hard work, nature and relations.
- Women journalists have to become Mary Kom, wear gloves.
- Be your own teacher in photography, experiment a lot.
- Do not hurry, work hard with patience. Do not expect a red carpet.
- Your work will ultimately get you recognition. Without a camera, some people may not even recognize you.
- There is no need to go to the forest for nature photography, subjects are scattered around you
