Elephants keep coming and going in the forests of Dhamtari district. Due to their presence, there is a possibility of any untoward incident. One such incident has happened today, where an elephant crushed a woman to death who had gone to pluck tendu leaves.
It was told that Surekhabai, a resident of village Dokal under Kergaon police station area, had gone to the forest of compartment number 108 Dokal with her husband Kirtan Suryavanshi to pluck tendu leaves. During this time, more villagers were present with them and they were plucking tendu leaves. Then suddenly an elephant arrived from Kanker side and took the life of Surekhabai, creating terror.
On receiving the information, police station in-charge Pradeep Singh and forest department employees reached the spot. After Panchnama, the body has been sent to the district hospital for postmortem. Kergaon Ranger Omkar Sinha said that the work of plucking tendu leaves has started from today. The couple from Dokal had gone to the forest to pluck tendu leaves. During this time, an elephant coming from Kanker side caught Surekha Bai in its grip and she died. After Panchnama, the body has been sent for postmortem. Immediate assistance amount of Rs 25000 will be given to the family. After this, a case will be made and compensation will also be given. People in the forest have been alerted.
