18th Statistics Day celebrated at government offices

Raipur:(Team Newsbuddy) : The National Statistical Office (NSO), Government of India, Raipur organized the 18th Statistics Day celebration on 29th June, at C V RAMAN HALL, School of Studies in Science, Pt Ravishankar Shukla University, Raipur. The Chief Guest of the Statistics Day celebration was Prof. Sachchidanand Shukla, Vice Chancellor, Pt Ravishankar Shukla University, Raipur. The programme was presided over by Shri Altaf Hussain Haji, Deputy Director General, National Statistical Office, Raipur. Prof. Vyas Dubey, Head of Department, School of Studies in Statistics, Pt Ravishankar Shukla University, Prof. Ravindra Brahme, Head of Department, School of Studies in Economics and N. Buliwal, Joint Director, Directorate of Economics and Statistics, Chhattisgarh were present in the program. The guests were welcomed by R.K. Srivastava, Senior Statistical Officer, National Statistical Office, Raipur.
Statistics Day celebration was inaugurated by lighting the lamp jointly by the Chief Guest Prof. Sachchidanand Shukla and Altaf Hussain Haji, Deputy Director General. Presiding over the program, Altaf Hussain Haji, Deputy Director General, National Statistical Office, Raipur said that keeping in mind the remarkable contribution made by the famous statistician Prof. Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis in the field of socio-economic planning and policy making after independence, the Government of India celebrates his birthday on 29th June every year as Statistics Day at the national level. The main objective of celebrating Statistics Day is to create public awareness about the role and importance of statistics in socio-economic planning, policy making and decision making for the development of the country, especially among the younger generation. Also, the aim of involving the students of School of Studies in Economics and School of Studies in Statistics of this University with our organization is to promote awareness about official statistics and to enlighten the young minds about the various facts and figures of the Indian official statistical system. He informed that the theme of Statistics Day for the year 2024 has been set as “Use of Data for decision-making”.

The Deputy Director General said that data based decision making is an important and most essential skill to better understand the statistical information obtained from official statistics and to help in making evidence based decisions. The provision of reliable and high quality data and information provided by the National Statistical Offices (NSO) and other sources of official data is extremely important and its need for economies and societies is constantly increasing. Also in the current scenario of Sustainable Development Goals, statistics plays an important role in relation to the goals and achievements of various indicators of each goal. In this regard, he informed about the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
The chief guest of the programme, Vice Chancellor of Pt Ravishankar Shukla University, Raipur, Prof. Sachchidanand Shukla, in his address, stressed the importance of statistics and made the students aware of the techniques of statistics and its application because today statistics is used in some form or the other in every field. He said that before starting any major work in any field, statistics is specially used by the Central Government, State Governments and other institutions for planning, analysis and assessment of results.
Prof. Ravindra Brahme, Head of Department, School of Studies in Economics, Pt Ravishankar Shukla University, while addressing the gathering, elaborately underlined the special contribution of Prof. PC Mahalanobis in the field of statistics and sample surveys. He said that just as data is needed in taking decisions in our daily life, similarly data plays an important role in all fields for making nationwide plans. Therefore, the data collected by the National Statistical Office under the Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation, Government of India, has special importance for policy planning and development of the country.
On this occasion, Prof. Vyas Dubey, Head of Department, School of Studies in Statistics, Pt Ravishankar Shukla University, enlightened about the life of Prof. PC Mahalanobis, his works, his achievements and his contribution to the development of the country and made the students aware of the importance and utility of statistics.
On the occasion of Statistics Day, apart from the addresses of the Chief Guest and Special Guests, presentations were also made by various scholars on the main topic and a quiz competition was organized. The winners of the quiz competition were awarded.
On this occasion, officers of the Directorate of Economic and Statistics, professors and students of the School of Studies in Statistics and School of Studies in Economics of Pt Ravishankar Shukla University, officers/employees of the National Statistical Office, Raipur were present. At the end of the program, C P S Markam, Assistant Director, National Statistical Office, Raipur delivered vote of thanks.
