Uttarakhand’s name in history, first state to implement UCC; everything from timeline to rules
2 min readNew Delhi (Team Newsbuddy): Uniform Civil Code (UCC) has been implemented in Uttarakhand. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami inaugurated the rules and portal ucc.uk.gov.in of the code at the Chief Servant House located at the Chief Minister’s residence.
With the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code, Uttarakhand became the first state to do so after independence. The Uttarakhand government has enacted the Uniform Civil Code law with the aim of giving equal rights to all citizens.
On February 7, 2024, the Assembly passed the bill related to it. On March 12, it received approval from the President. Then on March 14, the government decided to make its rules before implementing the Uniform Civil Code. The rules were prepared after almost a year of exercise. After this, special training was given to the personnel to implement it on the ground. As per the provisions of the code, an online portal has also been created to register various subjects. Scope
Applicable to the entire state of Uttarakhand, except scheduled tribes, as well as residents of Uttarakhand living outside the state.

To implement UCC, SDM Registrar and Gram Panchayat Development Officer will be the Sub Registrar in rural areas. Whereas in Nagar Panchayat-Municipalities, the concerned SDM will be the Registrar and Executive Officer will be the Sub Registrar. Similarly, in Municipal Corporation area, Municipal Commissioner will be the Registrar and Tax Inspector will be the Sub Registrar. In Cantonment area, the concerned CEO will be the Registrar and Resident Medical Officer or the officer authorized by the CEO will be the Sub Registrar. Above all these will be the Registrar General, who is a Secretary level officer and Inspector General of Registration.
