Model-turned-MP Ruby Dhalla joins race for Canadian PM post

Ottawa/New Delhi (Team Newsbuddy): Punjabi-origin Canadian MP Ruby Dhalla has recently announced her candidacy for the Liberal Party leadership race and for the post of Prime Minister. She worked in the Bollywood film ‘Kyon? Kis Liye?’ two decades ago. The film was shot on a low budget. Directed by Vinod Talwar, the film is based on the murder trial of Hamilton serial killer Sukhwinder Dhillon.

First time MP in 2004

50-year-old Ruby was born in Canada to an immigrant family from Punjab. For the first time in 2004, she was elected to the House of Commons as a Member of Parliament for Brampton, Springdale and held the post till 2011.

Ruby played the role of a police officer in her first and only film released in 2003. Shortly after the DVD release, the Indian-origin leader alleged that her images were tampered with in the film’s promotional material and tried to stop the film’s DVD release. However, the filmmakers denied Ruby’s allegation. According to a CTV report in 2009, filmmaker Charanjit Sihra said that no one had tampered with any of Ruby Dhalla’s images. Sihra said, ‘She came to Hamilton and she always wanted to be a Bollywood star. I gave her a chance to work in the film.’

Ruby Dhalla is one of the first women of Indian origin to be elected to the Parliament of Canada along with Conservative Nina Agarwal. She went to the House of Commons by winning re-election in 2006 and 2008, but lost in 2011. Apart from this, she has also been a model and hotelier. In 1993, Ruby was the runner-up in the Miss India Canada contest.
