PM Narendra Modi inaugurates IIT Bhilai’s permanent campus

Raipur. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the permanent campus of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bhilai, dedicating it to the nation. The virtual ceremony, organized in Jammu, also saw the Prime Minister inaugurating the newly constructed buildings of Kendriya Vidyalaya in Kurud and Kawardha. Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai participated in the inaugural programme from IIT Bhilai. The institute’s campus is under development across nearly 400 acres.

Expressing gratitude for the inauguration of IIT Bhilai’s permanent campus, Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai stated, “Today is a day of pride for Chhattisgarh. I thank the Prime Minister and extend my heartfelt gratitude for inaugurating, laying the foundation stone, and dedicating to the nation 220 development projects worth Rs 32,000 crore for the country, including three educational institutions in Chhattisgarh.”

He congratulated and extended best wishes to the IIT Bhilai family on acquiring a well-equipped permanent campus. He expressed hope that this IIT will emerge as a center of excellence for higher education.

MP Vijay Baghel also commended the occasion, stating, It is the good fortune that we are witnessing the dedication of Bhilai IIT to the nation by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. The Prime Minister has inaugurated, laid the foundation stone, and dedicated to nation many higher educational institutions across the country. The youth of the country have received a great gift today.”

Chairman of the Board of Governors of Bhilai IIT, Shri K. Venkataramanan, and Director Prof. Rajiv Prakash also addressed the programme.

MP Vijay Baghel, MLA Doman Lal Korsewada and Lalit Chandrakar, Former Minister Prem Prakash Pandey, Ramsheela Sahu, Chairman of the Board of Governors of Bhilai IIT Mr. K. Venkataramanan and Director Prof. Rajeev Prakash also joined the inauguration programme. Former MLA Labhchand Bafna and IIT Bhilai Registrar Wing Commander Dr Jayesh Chandra S. Pai (Retd.), along with various public representatives, IIT professors, and students were also present on the occasion.

IIT Bhilai shifts to permanent campus with over 1000 students enrolled across 11 engineering branches

Currently, over 1,000 students are enrolled across 11 engineering branches at the Indian Institute of Technology Bhilai. The institute initially commenced classes in 2016 at the Government Engineering College, Raipur, serving as its temporary campus. However, since August 2023, classes have begun at the permanent campus located in Bhilai.

Construction of the permanent campus began on July 8, 2020, following the foundation stone laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 14, 2018. Spanning 400 acres, the IIT Bhilai campus received an initial sanction of Rs 1,090.18 crore from the Union Education Ministry for its development. Various facilities including lecture halls, seminar rooms, and classrooms have been constructed within the campus. Besides, several buildings within the campus are named after prominent rivers and mountains of Chhattisgarh including Indravati, Shivnath, Kanhar, Mainpat, Gaurlata, Sihawa, and Pelma.
