2 min read

New Delhi . More than 500 well-known lawyers of the country have written a letter to Supreme Court Chief Justice DY Chandrachud. The letter writers include all the prominent names including senior advocate Harish Salve and Bar Council of India (BCI) President Manan Kumar Mishra. These lawyers have expressed concern in the letter about the threat to the integrity of the judiciary. These lawyers say that some ‘special groups’ are trying to influence the judicial process and are influencing the decisions of the court.

The letter states that these groups are making baseless allegations with political agendas and trying to tarnish the image of the judiciary. These tactics are clearly visible in the cases related to political faces surrounded in corruption cases. In such cases, attempts to influence court decisions and defame the judiciary are most evident.

The letter states that certain groups allegedly want to present a wrong image of the functioning of the judiciary by fabricating false narratives. These groups compare the current courts with an alleged ‘golden age’ of courts, so as to influence judicial decisions and shake public confidence in the judiciary.

‘Some lawyers trying to influence judges’
The letter shared by official sources targets a section of lawyers without naming them. It alleges that they defend politicians during the day and then try to influence judges through the media at night.

The letter, titled ‘Threat to the Judiciary: Protecting the Judiciary from Political and Professional Pressure’, contains the names of more than 600 lawyers. These include other prominent names like Adish Aggarwal, Chetan Mittal, Pinky Anand, Hitesh Jain, Ujjwala Pawar, Uday Hola and Swarupama Chaturvedi.
