Three new criminal laws from Penal Code to Justice Code: IG Sanjeev Shukla
2 min readRaipur,(Team Newsbuddy): The three new criminal laws that will come into effect from July 01, 2024 across the country will lead from the Penal Code to the Justice Code. This was said by Inspector General of Police (Bilaspur Range) Sanjeev Shukla in the media workshop ‘Vartalaap’ organized in Raipur on three new criminal laws under the joint aegis of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India and Press Information Bureau, Raipur. Reporters covering legal and crime beats of local print, electronic and online media participated in this conversation.
Addressing the conversation, Shukla said that the country is moving away from the colonial law of almost two hundred and fifty years and is starting a new era through the Indian Judicial Code 2023, Indian Civil Defense Code 2023 and Indian Evidence Act 2023, which are full of Indianness.
While discussing the three new laws in detail, Sanjeev Shukla said that the new law has been made keeping the public in mind. He said that the purpose of the three new major laws is to provide justice instead of punishment. Shukla said that today the number of cyber crimes has increased a lot. There was no provision for cyber crimes in the old laws, but arrangements have been made in the new law which is the demand of today’s time. He said that in these new laws, emphasis has been laid on information technology as well as the establishment of forensic labs.
On this occasion, Deputy Director Prosecution, Chhattisgarh Police Headquarters, Nava Raipur, Avanish Chaurasia informed that provision of e-record is being made in the new laws, under which Zero FIR, e-FIR and charge sheet will be digital. Information will be provided to the victim within 90 days and forensic investigation will be mandatory in cases where punishment of 7 years or more is provided. He informed that sedition law has been repealed and treason has been defined. It provides for punishment of up to seven years or life imprisonment for acts against the sovereignty and integrity of India. He informed that the new criminal laws are very simple and can be easily understood if studied with ease. He informed that if a fugitive criminal is found guilty, he will be given a sentence of 10 years or more/life imprisonment/death sentence and necessary steps have been taken in collaboration with other countries to confiscate the property of fugitive criminals. Along with this, new provisions have been made on organized crimes. Apart from this, by defining terrorism, the policy of zero tolerance towards it has been strengthened and provision of death penalty or life imprisonment has been made for terrorist acts.
