2 min readNew Delhi (Team Newsbuddy): The Central Government has decided to celebrate 25 June as ‘Constitution Hatya Diwas’ to remind of the Emergency. Announcing this, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that this day will be celebrated to remind the countrymen of the dark chapter when the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi declared the Emergency in 1975.
Background of Emergency
The Emergency was imposed on 25 June 1975, which lasted for 21 months. During this time incidents like violation of fundamental rights, ban on freedom of press and arrest of opposition leaders took place. Amit Shah said that this day will strengthen our commitment to protect democracy and the Constitution.
The main objective of Constitution Hatya Diwas is to make the public aware of the events of that time, when democratic values were violated in the country. By celebrating this day, the government wants to ensure that future generations never forget this dark chapter of history and remain vigilant towards protecting the Constitution.
Amit Shah’s statement
Amit Shah said, “The country witnessed the darkest phase of democracy during the Emergency. This day reminds us of the time when individual freedom and fundamental rights were violated. Samvidhan Hatya Diwas reminds us of our responsibility towards protecting the Constitution.”
Opposition’s reaction
Opposition parties have reacted sharply to this announcement. They say that the government is politicizing the issue and using it for current political gains. However, the government has rejected these allegations and said that this decision has been taken solely with the aim of maintaining historical facts and democratic values.
