Vadodara (Team Newsbuddy): The stage is set for the UTT 86th Junior and Youth National Championships, a premier event that brings together the crème de la crème of India’s Under-19 and Under-17 table tennis talent. With participation from 31 states and institutions (Boys) and 29 (Girls), the tournament begins tomorrow at the SAMA Indoor Stadium and promises eight days of thrilling action, packed with team and individual events. For these young paddlers, this championship is not just another tournament. It is a stepping stone toward national recognition and glory.

The event is structured to keep the excitement alive throughout, with the girls taking the court first, followed by the boys after five days. This split format has not only enhanced the organization but also provided a sharper focus on each category, ensuring every match counts. The stakes are high, as players vie for medals that signify their hard work and dedication.

Among the boys, defending champions West Bengal are clear favourites. Their squad, led by the sensational Ankur Bhattacharjee, is brimming with confidence. Ankur, riding on his recent successes in national ranking tournaments, is expected to win his matches comfortably. Supported by Punit Biswas, Shankadip Das, and Oishik Ghosh,

Bengal’s lineup appears too strong for their competitors. Tamil Nadu, spearheaded by P.B. Abhinand, Preyesh Raj, and M. R. Balamurugan, may provide some resistance but lacks the depth to topple Bengal. Meanwhile, dark horses like Delhi, Karnataka, PSPBA, and NCOE could make things interesting, aiming for podium finishes.

In the girls’ division, defending champions Maharashtra are equally dominant. Led by the in-form Taneesha Kotecha, who is enjoying the best phase of her career, the team also boasts talents like Pritha Vartikar and Sayali Wani. Together, they form a formidable lineup that poses a serious challenge to all opponents, including West Bengal, which relies on Syndrela Das. Tamil Nadu, with players like Ananya Muralidharan and Shriya Anand, and Uttar Pradesh, featuring Avani Tripathi and Suhani Mahajan, has strong individual players but may struggle in team dynamics.

However, some girls face a dilemma, whether to represent their college or their state, as All India University (AIU) has suddenly announced inter-zonal collegiate events, giving scant regard for the National Calendar events published by the TTFI in September 2024. Certain colleges are pressuring students to compete in these events, jeopardizing the careers of top players. This has undeniably weakened some states, unable to field their best talent. The national body had even written, requesting AIU for adjustment in dates but it has not responded.

The tournament will use Stiga tables and equipment, with DHS balls for Under-19 matches, ensuring a top-tier playing experience. The refereeing panel, led by Competition Manager N. Ganeshan and supported by experienced officials like Mangesh Mopkar, will oversee the proceedings with over 65 umpires ensuring fair play. The Table Tennis Association of Baroda has meticulously planned accommodations, transportation, and meals for all participants, ensuring a smooth and professional experience.

The Nationals serve as a proving ground for young paddlers who have already excelled at state and ranking championships. It is not just about individual brilliance but also about teamwork, resilience, and handling pressure at a national level. With defending champions West Bengal (boys) and Maharashtra (girls) leading the charge, the competition delivers high-intensity matches, fierce rivalries, and moments of brilliance that could define the future stars of Indian table tennis.

For players, it’s an opportunity to showcase their mettle and aim for national glory, while spectators can look forward to witnessing the next generation of talent in action. All eyes are now on the SAMA Indoor Stadium as the countdown begins for what promises to be an exhilarating tournament.
